The scent of damp earth, a memory of rain clinging to the air, always brought them back. Josef and I, or rather, the ghost of Josef and the boy I once was, walking the familiar track that snaked through the whispering pines. It was a path worn smooth by generations of feet, a silent testament to the lives lived and lost on this patch of earth. But today, the ghost was more vivid, the boy more insistent, his laughter a fragile echo against the rustle of leaves.
We were searching for something, though I couldn't recall what. Perhaps it was the perfect skipping stone, or the secret hiding place where the wild strawberries grew plump and sweet. Or maybe, just maybe, we were looking for that feeling, that untroubled buoyancy that had once been as natural as breathing. The weight of it all, this ceaseless questioning, this gnawing sense of not-quite-belonging, had settled upon me like a shroud, obscuring the sunlit meadows of my youth.
I remembered a summer day, the kind where the heat shimmered above the fields and the air hummed with the industry of unseen insects. I must have been no older than ten. Josef, his face a roadmap of sun-baked wrinkles, had been mending a fence near the edge of the woods, his movements slow and deliberate, each gesture imbued with the wisdom of years. I, meanwhile, was lost in my own world, a universe conjured from the patterns of bark on an ancient oak, the flight of a dragonfly, the secret language of the wind.
