The air in the drawing-room of Crimson Manor had always held a certain hushed reverence, a scent of old money and polished wood. Now, it felt suffocating, thick with unspoken accusations. Chloe sat beside me, her usual bright spark dimmed, her gaze fixed on the ornate Persian rug as if it held the answers we sought. Across from us, Lady Victoria Sterling, impeccably dressed as always, her face a mask of carefully constructed grief, clasped her hands in her lap. The silence stretched, taut as a violin string about to snap.

“Lady Victoria,” I began, my voice deliberately calm, a stark contrast to the storm brewing within me. “We’ve been over the events of that night repeatedly. And while the official report states it was an accident, certain… anomalies have presented themselves.”

She inclined her head, a subtle movement that managed to convey both fragility and a steely resolve. “I have told you everything I know, Mr. Vance. My husband, a man of robust health, tragically lost his footing. It was a terrible, unforeseen accident.”
