Lady Victoria Sterling. The name itself conjured an image of polished marble and hushed whispers. She was the mistress of Crimson Manor, a woman of evident refinement, whose grief, while perhaps genuine, seemed to possess a certain performative quality. Julian had observed it during our initial walkthrough – the carefully controlled tremors of her voice, the precisely timed dabs at her eyes with a lace handkerchief, the way she held herself with an almost regal posture, even in mourning. It was a performance, and I, Chloe Bennett, was growing increasingly adept at spotting a poorly rehearsed scene.

“Her alibi is ironclad, Julian,” I stated, leaning back in the plush velvet chair at the temporary office we’d set up in the manor’s seldom-used library. The scent of old paper and leather hung heavy in the air, a stark contrast to the floral perfume Victoria Sterling favored. “She was in her rooms, indisposed with a migraine, from late afternoon until well after the estimated time of Lord William’s fall. Her maid, Agnes, confirmed it. Saw her take the laudanum, saw her retire for the night.”

Julian, ever the meticulous observer, was meticulously polishing a pair of spectacles with a soft cloth. “Alibis are like fine china, Chloe. Beautiful to look at, but easily shattered if handled carelessly. A maid, loyal to her mistress, is a powerful witness. But a maid who fears losing her position, or worse, is indebted to her mistress in some way… well, that adds a different hue to the glass.” He slid the spectacles onto his nose, his eyes, usually sharp and direct, seemed to hold a distant, pensive quality. “Did Agnes seem… entirely convincing?”
