The air in the hidden bunker tasted of damp earth and desperation. Simon Riley, still bearing the phantom ache of phantom limbs from the ambush, watched Vance. The man was a whirlwind of quiet intensity, his eyes the colour of a storm-tossed sea, constantly scanning maps, his fingers tracing lines of supply routes and enemy strongholds with an almost reverent touch. He spoke with a low, resonant voice that commanded attention, not through volume, but through the sheer conviction that vibrated beneath each word.
“They believe we are broken,” Vance said, his gaze meeting Riley’s across the rough-hewn table. The flickering lamplight cast long shadows that danced with the urgency of their conversation. “They assume the village was our last stand. They underestimate the spirit of a people pushed too far.”
Riley grunted, the sound a rough exhalation of skepticism. He’d been abandoned, left for dead by the very people who were supposed to protect him. Trust was a currency he’d long since spent. But Vance… Vance was different. There was no pretense, no grandstanding. Just a raw, unwavering commitment to a cause that had already cost him dearly, Riley could see it in the lines etched around his eyes, the weary set of his shoulders.
