She spoke in hushed tones to the man beside her, a figure who radiated a quiet authority. Vance.

Vance approached, his gaze steady, unwavering. There was no pity in his eyes, only a keen appraisal, the kind a hunter gives a wounded but still dangerous prey. "You're a long way from anywhere, soldier," he said, his voice a low rumble.
