The air in Seraphina Dubois’s opulent study was thick with the scent of aged paper, polished wood, and something else… something subtly intoxicating, like the perfume of a forbidden bloom. Elias Thorne stood before her, the artifact—a palm-sized obsidian scarab, pulsing with a faint, internal luminescence—held loosely in his gloved hand. Outside, the city hummed a restless nocturne, oblivious to the silent negotiation unfolding within these gilded walls.

Seraphina, draped in a gown the color of a twilight sky, gestured with a slender hand towards a plush velvet armchair. “Sit, Mr. Thorne. This is hardly the posture of a man about to make a momentous decision.” Her voice was a silken caress, each word carefully chosen to disarm and entice.

Elias remained standing. He’d learned long ago that comfort was a luxury for those who had nothing to hide. And he had oceans of that. “I’m not here to discuss upholstery, Madame Dubois.”
