He moved with a predator’s grace, his senses heightened, cataloging the scuttling of rats, the distant wail of a siren, the barely perceptible hum of the city’s restless heart. Silas Vance trailed him, a shadow of grim determination, his presence a constant, unspoken judgment. Elias ignored it. He’d grown accustomed to the weight of suspicion.
Their quarry was a ghost, a dealer of illicit knowledge and forgotten lore known only as ‘The Weaver.’ Rumor had it, The Weaver could procure anything, from forbidden texts to stolen whispers, for the right price. And right now, Elias needed to know who had the Serpent’s Eye, and more importantly, why.
“He doesn’t like to be found,” Elias murmured, his voice a low rasp, barely disturbing the stagnant air. He gestured with his chin towards a grimy, unmarked door tucked between a derelict pawn shop and a boarded-up bakery. “This is it.”
