Elias, his jaw tight, watched Marcus from across the cavernous space, a knot of unease tightening in his gut. The man’s eagerness, his almost frantic desire to assist, had felt off from the start, a discordant note in the symphony of their desperate flight. Silas stood beside Elias, his gaze as steady and unreadable as ever, but Elias could sense the subtle shift in his posture, the way his hand hovered near the hilt of his blade. “Are you sure about this place, Marcus?” Elias’s voice was a low rumble, carrying across the vast emptiness. He kept his eyes on Marcus, noting the flicker of something unreadable in the man’s gaze.
Marcus offered a strained smile, a gesture that didn't quite reach his eyes. “As sure as I can be, Elias. I’ve scouted it myself. No one knows we’re here. It’s… perfect.” He gestured vaguely at the surrounding gloom, his hands fluttering like trapped birds. “You need to rest. You’ve both been through hell.”
