The air in my room was thick, heavy with the scent of night-blooming jasmine and something else… something metallic and sharp that always clung to him. Ash. He was a phantom in my life, a creature of shadow and myth, yet he felt more real than the sunlight that streamed through my window during the day. I traced the rim of my teacup, the ceramic cool against my fingertips, a stark contrast to the fiery turmoil that simmered within me.
He’d been here last night. Not in my room, not physically, but his presence had been a suffocating blanket, a silent promise of his return. He spoke of his world in hushed tones, painting pictures of ancient castles and eternal nights, of a power that pulsed through veins like liquid moonlight. And I, foolish mortal, had listened, my heart beating a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a drumbeat of fascination and fear.
My mother had warned me about getting too close to the edges of things, about the allure of the unknown. She spoke of shadows that could swallow you whole, of desires that could consume you. I’d always dismissed her words as the ramblings of an overly cautious woman, but now… now I understood. Ash was the embodiment of those warnings, a beautiful, terrifying abyss into which I felt myself irrevocably falling.
