A Pawn's Purpose
Lysandra begins her machinations, viewing Angie as a strategic weakness to Ash. The threat to Angie becomes a tangible danger, forcing Ash's hand.
The air in my chambers had grown stagnant, thick with a tension that coiled in my gut like a serpent. Silas stood by the obsidian window, his silhouette sharp against the bruised twilight sky, a familiar, disapproving stillness about him. He spoke without turning, his voice a low rumble that vibrated with ancient weariness. "She is a weakness, Ash. A glaring, undeniable vulnerability that they will exploit."
I paced the length of the room, the velvet of the rug muffling my footsteps, a stark contrast to the thunder in my chest. "And I will not allow it." My voice was a low growl, a promise more than a statement. Angie. The name itself was a brand, a burning ember in the cold expanse of my existence. She was the first true warmth I had felt in centuries, the first flicker of light in the perpetual twilight of my being. And now, she was a target.
"You speak of stopping them as if it were a simple matter of will," Silas countered, his tone laced with a cynicism born of endless centuries. "Lysandra does not play games of chance. She plays with lives. Yours, hers, and the mortal's." He finally turned, his eyes, ancient and knowing, fixed on mine. "She senses your… attachment. And she will use it to break you."
