Chapter 6
Shadows of the Past
Ash grapples with his predatory instincts, the centuries of darkness within him warring against his burgeoning feelings for Angie. He fears his own nature.
The silence of my chambers was a familiar shroud, a comforting cloak woven from centuries of solitude. Yet, tonight, it felt thin, frayed at the edges by the persistent hum of Angie’s presence. Even in her absence, her scent, a delicate bloom of mortal innocence and something far more intoxicating, clung to the air, a phantom limb I couldn’t shake. I paced the polished obsidian floor, each step echoing the frantic beat of a heart I hadn’t possessed in lifetimes. It was a ghost of a sensation, a tremor that vibrated through my ancient bones, a stark testament to the anomaly she was.
My reflection in the darkened window offered no solace. The same sharp angles, the same predatory stillness that had served me well through countless ages, now seemed a mockery. Within those eyes, usually pools of impenetrable darkness, flickered a nascent fear, a vulnerability I’d long buried beneath layers of calculated indifference. Angie. The name itself was a dangerous whisper on my tongue, a forbidden incantation. She was a flame, and I, a creature of the abyss, was drawn to her light, knowing full well that one wrong move, one flicker of the instinct I fought so desperately to control, would consume her.
The beast within stirred, a low growl rumbling in my chest. It was a constant companion, a part of my very being, a legacy of blood and hunger. For centuries, I had mastered it, bent it to my will, used it as a weapon. But Angie… Angie softened its edges, made it restless, discordant. It yearned for her, not in the way I did, with a possessive ache that bordered on obsession, but with a primal hunger that threatened to unravel me. I could feel its awareness of her, the way it cataloged her scent, her warmth, her very essence, with a possessive hunger that mirrored my own, yet was far more terrifying. It was the hunger of a predator, unburdened by the fragile tendrils of affection I was foolishly allowing to entwine me.
