The night air, usually a balm, felt heavy, thick with an unseen tension that prickled the sensitive skin of my neck. It began as a whisper, a faint tremor in the ancient currents of the city, a scent that was not of this world, yet clung to its edges like a stain. Lysandra. The name was a curse, a venomous echo from a past I had tried to bury beneath centuries of dust and solitude. She was a predator of the purest kind, her hunger as insatiable as my own, but devoid of the desperate, fractured tenderness that now bound me to Angie.

I had felt her presence before, a phantom limb of an old war, but never this close, never with such pointed intent. It was the scent of her, or rather, the scent of what she sought. Angie. The thought sent a jolt of ice through my veins, a primal alarm that clawed at the carefully constructed walls around my heart. She had found a weakness, a crack in my eternal armor, and like a seasoned hunter, she was following the trail. My Angie. The possessiveness that surged was a familiar, potent tide, but now it was laced with a cold dread.

I had been so careful, so meticulous in weaving my existence around hers, a silken web spun in the twilight hours. Our meetings were stolen moments, breaths of shared darkness in a world that would tear us apart. I watched her from the shadows, a silent guardian, my every instinct screaming a warning she could not hear. She was a fragile bloom, delicate and vibrant, and Lysandra was the blight.
