The city pulsed beneath us, a symphony of distant sirens and the low thrum of a thousand lives I could extinguish with a breath. But my focus was singular, sharp, and entirely consumed by the warmth beside me. Angie. Her hand, small and delicate, rested on the cool leather of my car seat, her fingers tracing invisible patterns as she stared out at the rain-slicked streets. Each drop that splattered against the windshield was a tiny percussion, a reminder of the world outside, a world I was increasingly eager to shut out.

“Where are we going, Ash?” Her voice, a soft murmur, barely disturbed the charged silence that always settled between us. It was a silence born not of awkwardness, but of unspoken things, of desires that coiled and uncoiled in the darkness.

I tightened my grip on the steering wheel, the worn leather a familiar comfort. “Somewhere… private.” The word tasted like a promise, a threat, a decree. Private. For her. For us. Away from prying eyes, away from the gnawing unease that had begun to settle in the pit of my stomach whenever she was out of my sight.
