Chapter 18
Ash's Drastic Decision
To guarantee Angie's ultimate safety, Ash makes a profound and irreversible choice, solidifying his dominance and their dark, eternal bond.
The air in the chamber was thick with the scent of ancient dust and something else, something metallic and cloying that clung to the back of my throat. Angie’s scent. It was a stark, fragile bloom in this tomb of shadows, a beacon that, for all its beauty, threatened to consume me. I watched her, even now, her small frame curled against the cold stone of my throne, her breathing a soft, rhythmic counterpoint to the suffocating silence that had descended upon us. The whispers of Lysandra’s threat had solidified into a tangible dread, a predator circling its prey, and that prey was her.
Silas stood by the arched doorway, a sentinel carved from obsidian, his gaze fixed on me. He had seen it, the flicker of desperation in my eyes, the raw, untamed possessiveness that coiled within me whenever Angie was even remotely in danger. He understood, perhaps more than I cared to admit, the chasm I was teetering on. “She is vulnerable, Ash,” he stated, his voice a low rumble that barely disturbed the stillness. “Lysandra will not cease her pursuit. She sees your affection as a weakness, a door to your undoing.”
My fingers tightened around the armrest of the throne, the cold stone biting into my skin. A weakness. Love. For centuries, I had existed in a state of detached self-preservation, a predator moving through the world with a hunter’s cold logic. Then Angie had stumbled into my existence, a sunbeam piercing the perpetual twilight of my being. And with her came this… this fierce, agonizing need to shield her, to claim her, to make her mine in a way that transcended mere possession.
