The air in the study was thick with the scent of old leather and something else, something acrid and ancient that clung to Silas like the dust on his velvet robes. Moonlight, a pale, indifferent visitor, sliced through the mullioned windows, illuminating the motes dancing in the charged stillness. I watched Silas, his face a mask of impassive age, his eyes like chips of obsidian reflecting the scant light. He had summoned me, and the summons itself felt like a judgment.
"You grow careless, Ash," Silas began, his voice a low rasp that scraped against my nerves. He didn't need to elaborate. I knew what he meant. Angie. My fascination. My *possession*.
"Careless is a word for mortals, Silas," I countered, my own voice a low growl. "I am merely… attentive."
