The air in the chamber was thick, heavy with the scent of ancient dust and something else… something metallic and sharp that made the back of my throat prickle. Ash stood before me, a silhouette against the faint moonlight that bled through the high, arched windows. His eyes, usually molten gold, were dark pools reflecting the fear that had begun to bloom in my own chest. Lysandra’s threat, a venomous whisper in the night, had landed, and its poison was seeping into every corner of our hidden existence.
"She knows," Ash’s voice was a low growl, the sound vibrating through the stone floor and into the soles of my feet. "She knows about you. About us."
I swallowed, my heart thudding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. Every instinct screamed at me to run, to flee back to the sunlit world I’d left behind, to the comforting normalcy that now seemed a lifetime ago. But my feet were rooted to the spot, my gaze locked on Ash. He was the storm, and I, a foolish moth drawn to its destructive beauty.
