The air in my chambers, usually a sanctuary of cool, ancient stone and the scent of dried herbs, felt thick with a new kind of dread. It was a palpable thing, clinging to the velvet drapes, seeping into the polished mahogany of my desk. Angie slept in the adjoining room, a fragile flame of life in the heart of my eternal night. My senses, honed by centuries, strained against the silence, searching for threats that weren't there. Yet.

Lysandra. The name itself was a viper’s hiss on my tongue. She was a shadow that had stalked my periphery for too long, a persistent irritant that now threatened to become a fatal wound. Her game was always the same: isolate, weaken, conquer. And my foolish, undeniable attachment to Angie had laid bare a vulnerability she was all too eager to exploit.

Silas had been the first to notice. His ancient eyes, usually placid as a frozen lake, held a storm of concern when he’d found me pacing by the window, my gaze fixed on the distant city lights that held Angie’s oblivious existence. “Her scent is becoming a beacon, Ash,” he’d warned, his voice a low rumble. “A beacon for those who hunt in the dark. You’ve drawn her too close.”
