The Shadow Lengthens
A fleeting shadow darts past. Objects move on their own. The presence becomes more active, its tactics shifting from subtle to overtly menacing.
The air in the main laboratory felt heavier than before, thick with unspoken dread. It clung to us like the damp chill that seeped from the concrete walls. Liam, usually the first to crack a joke or drum his fingers impatiently, was unnervingly still, his gaze fixed on the far corner of the room. Chloe, her brow furrowed, was hunched over a control panel, her fingers hovering over buttons that seemed to mock us with their inertness. I, meanwhile, felt a prickle of unease crawl up my spine, a sensation that had become my constant companion since we’d stumbled into this forgotten tomb.
It started subtly, as these things always do, I suppose. A flicker at the edge of my vision. A shadow, too quick to be real, too distinct to be imagined. I’d dismissed it at first, a trick of the low emergency lighting, the strain on my eyes from squinting in the gloom. But then it happened again. And again. Each time, a fleeting glimpse, a darting movement that vanished before I could properly focus.
“Did you see that?” I whispered, my voice raspy.
