Chapter 7
Chloe's Insight
Chloe uses her tech skills to access fragmented data. She uncovers scientific jargon suggesting bio-engineering and psychological manipulation.
The hum of the generator was a fragile thread in the suffocating quiet of Site 39. It was a sound that should have been comforting, a sign of our brief, borrowed control over this desolate place, but here, it felt like an intrusion, a desperate gasp against the vast, oppressive silence. Liam, ever the pragmatist when not charging headfirst into danger, fiddled with the frayed wires of the portable generator, his brow furrowed in concentration. Chloe sat hunched over her tablet, its screen a stark, alien glow in the dim light of the main lab, her fingers flying across the surface like frantic insects. I watched them, a knot of unease tightening in my stomach, the kind that always surfaced when things got too quiet, too still. It was the stillness that felt wrong, the absence of any natural sound – no wind rustling through the trees outside, no distant animal calls, not even the soft scuttling of insects.
"Anything, Chloe?" Liam asked, his voice raspy, breaking the tension like a stone skipping across a placid lake. He wiped a smudge of grease from his cheek, his eyes flicking between the generator and Chloe.
Chloe didn't look up, her lips pressed into a thin line. "It's… fragmented. Like trying to piece together a shattered mirror. Most of the core files are corrupted, or deliberately wiped. But I'm getting… fragments. Snippets of data." She tapped a section of the screen, a series of alphanumeric codes scrolling past. "This looks like some kind of research designation. And this… this is definitely scientific jargon. 'Synaptic recalibration.' 'Emotional dampening protocols.' 'Cognitive restructuring'."
