Liam's Fear
Lost in the dark corridors, Liam's secret terror of the dark surfaces. He clings to James, his usual bravado replaced by raw fear. The facility seems to play on his phobia.
The air in the corridor was thick, heavy with the scent of dust and something else, something metallic and stale, like old blood. Every step we took echoed, amplified by the oppressive silence that had swallowed Site 39 whole. Chloe’s flashlight beam, usually a steady beacon, danced nervously, picking out peeling paint and the skeletal remains of rusted equipment. I kept a hand on Liam’s shoulder, a silent reassurance, though I wasn’t sure who I was trying to convince more, him or myself.
“This is insane, James,” Liam’s voice, usually a confident rumble, was tight, strained. He was walking closer to me than I’d ever seen him voluntarily in my life. His knuckles were white where he gripped his own arm. “We should have just stayed by the car. This place… it feels wrong.”
“We can’t go back the way we came,” Chloe reminded him, her voice quiet but firm. She was meticulously scanning the walls, her brow furrowed in concentration. “That door sealed itself. Remember?”
