The air inside the main corridor of Site 39 was thick and stale, a cloying mix of dust and something metallic. Liam, ever the daredevil, had pushed ahead, his flashlight beam cutting a frantic swathe through the gloom. I trailed behind, Chloe a silent shadow at my side, her brow furrowed with a familiar blend of worry and curiosity. The silence here was more than just an absence of sound; it was a heavy blanket, muffling even the thumping of my own heart.

"Seriously, Liam, slow down," I called out, my voice sounding unnaturally loud, swallowed by the oppressive quiet. "We don't know what's in here."

He didn't respond, his footsteps echoing further down the hall. Then, a sharp, violent *slam* reverberated through the facility, making us both jump. It was the sound of a heavy door being forcefully shut, a sound that spoke of finality.
