The drive back was a blur of muted colors and hushed tones. The familiar landscape of rolling hills and dense woods seemed alien, stripped of its comforting familiarity. It was as if the very air had changed, carrying a phantom chill that no amount of sunlight could dispel. Liam, usually the first to crack a joke or blast music, sat in the passenger seat, his gaze fixed on the passing trees, his knuckles white where he gripped the armrest. Chloe, in the back, was a statue of quiet tension, her eyes darting from the rearview mirror to the road ahead, as if expecting something to materialize from the shimmering heat haze. And me? I was just trying to breathe. Each inhale felt shallow, laced with the metallic tang of fear that had permeated Site 39.

We pulled into my driveway, the gravel crunching under the tires like a broken promise. The house, usually a beacon of warmth and safety, felt hollow. Mom was at work, Dad was out of town. The silence inside was deafening, a stark contrast to the suffocating silence we’d left behind. We ended up in the living room, sinking into the worn cushions of the sofa, the afternoon sun doing little to chase away the shadows clinging to us.

“So,” Liam finally broke the stillness, his voice raspy, as if he hadn’t spoken in days. “What now?”
