Back to the Light

They burst out of Site 39, gasping for fresh air. The sun feels blindingly bright. They've escaped, but the silence of the facility clings to them.

The world outside had never been so vibrant, so alive. The sun, a benevolent giant, beat down on us, its warmth a balm after the chilling, sterile confines of Site 39. We tumbled out of the rusted hatch, a tangled heap of limbs and gasps, each breath a victory. Liam, usually the first to crack a joke, just lay there for a moment, his chest heaving, eyes squeezed shut as if the very light might scorch him. Chloe, ever pragmatic, was already on her feet, brushing dirt from her jeans, a tremor in her hands that betrayed her outward calm. I pushed myself up, my muscles protesting, my mind a chaotic storm of relief and lingering dread. The air tasted sweet, laced with the scent of pine and damp earth, a stark contrast to the metallic, sickly-sweet aroma that had permeated the facility.

“We… we made it,” Liam stammered, his voice raspy. He finally opened his eyes, blinking rapidly, the vibrant green of the forest almost painful to behold.

Chloe nodded, her gaze sweeping across the dense treeline, as if expecting some invisible barrier to suddenly materialize and drag us back. “We’re out. We’re actually out.”
