The Guardian's Lair
They stumble upon what seems to be the central hub. A humming energy source pulses, the apparent origin of the facility's strange phenomena.
The air in the corridor grew heavy, thick with a silence that wasn't empty, but pregnant with unspoken things. Liam, ever the one to push ahead, kept a hand on my shoulder, a silent promise of protection that did little to quell the tremor running through me. Chloe, her brow furrowed in that way it did when she was wrestling with a particularly knotty problem, was scanning the walls with her flashlight, her beam dancing over peeling paint and what looked like scorch marks. We’d been walking for what felt like hours, the labyrinthine passages of Site 39 folding in on themselves, each turn leading to another identical, unsettling corridor.
Then, the humming started.
It was faint at first, a low thrum that vibrated more in our bones than in our ears. Liam stopped, his head cocked. "You guys hear that?" he whispered, his voice unnaturally loud in the oppressive quiet.
