Chapter 10
A Glimpse of the Experiment
They find a containment chamber. Faded diagrams and residual energy suggest a failed attempt to create a controlled consciousness or entity.
The air in the corridor had grown thick, heavy with a silence that pressed in on us, not like the absence of sound, but like a sound that had been forcibly suppressed. It was a silence that felt *watched*. We moved deeper into the bowels of Site 39, our flashlights cutting trembling paths through the gloom. Liam, ever the one to forge ahead, was practically vibrating with a mixture of apprehension and adrenaline, his usual bravado a thin veneer over something I suspected was just as unnerving for him as it was for me. Chloe, beside me, kept a steady, measured pace, her eyes scanning every detail, her brow furrowed in concentration.
We’d followed the faint hum, the one that had seemed to emanate from the very walls, a subtle vibration that had pulled us away from the relatively mundane decay of the administrative wings. It led us down a stairwell that smelled of ozone and something metallic, a scent that prickled the back of my throat. Each step echoed, a sharp, intrusive sound in the pervasive hush, and I found myself holding my breath, listening for any response, any shift in the oppressive quiet.

The walls were lined with what looked like reinforced glass, thick and opaque in places, but in others, it had been scarred and cracked, revealing glimpses of what lay beyond. The floor was a dark, polished metal, reflecting the weak beams of our flashlights like a still, black lake. In the center of the chamber stood a structure that defied immediate comprehension. It was a cylindrical containment unit, tall and imposing, comprised of interlocking metal plates and thick, reinforced plasteel. Wires snaked from it, disappearing into conduits in the floor and ceiling, their insulation frayed and brittle.
