The air in the interrogation room was a stale, recycled breath, heavy with unspoken accusations. Detective Harding watched them, the three remaining pillars of what had once been a fortress of friendship. Sarah, her face a roadmap of sleepless nights and raw grief, twisted a damp tissue in her hands. Mark, his jaw set in a familiar, stoic line, stared at the scuffed linoleum as if it held the secrets of the universe. Emily, perched on the edge of her chair, her eyes darting between the two, seemed perpetually on the verge of flight.
Harding had brought them here, not for individual questioning, but for a collective crucible. She’d learned early on that Alex’s death hadn’t fractured their group; it had merely exposed the fault lines that had always been there, hidden beneath layers of shared history and forced camaraderie. Now, those fault lines threatened to swallow them whole.
“We’ve been over this,” Sarah’s voice was a thin thread, frayed at the edges. “Alex was… he was a lot of things. But he didn’t deserve this.”
