The air in Detective Harding’s office felt thick with the stale scent of old coffee and unanswered questions. Sunlight, usually a welcome intrusion, seemed to mock the gloom that clung to the worn furniture and stacks of case files. Harding traced the rim of her mug, the ceramic cool against her fingertips. The alibis. They were the bedrock of any investigation, the neatly laid stones that should lead to the truth. But with Sarah, Mark, and Emily, the stones felt… loose. Like they’d been hastily placed, the mortar still wet and vulnerable.

She’d replayed their interviews countless times. Sarah, her voice a choked sob, recounting a quiet evening at home, tending to her youngest, a feverish child that made her story ring with maternal urgency. And Emily, her usual flutter of anxiety magnified, describing a restless night spent scrolling through social media, unable to sleep, the digital world a flimsy shield against her inner turmoil.

Harding’s gaze drifted to the whiteboard, a chaotic collage of names, dates, and scribbled notes. Alex’s murder. The brutal finality of it, the way his charismatic facade had crumbled to reveal something far more sinister beneath. The kidnapping of the children, a shadow that had fallen over their lives, now seemed inextricably linked, a dark tapestry woven with Alex’s secrets.
