Sarah stood at the edge of the abyss, the familiar, comforting ground of her life crumbling beneath her feet. Detective Harding’s gaze, steady and unnerving, felt like a spotlight, exposing every tremor of fear, every flicker of guilt. The sterile interview room, with its drab walls and the faint smell of stale coffee, had become a cage, and Sarah was clawing at the bars.

“I told you everything I know,” she repeated, her voice thin, reedy. It was a lie, a desperate, pathetic attempt to build a dam against the rising tide of Harding’s suspicions. She knew she knew more. The knowledge sat heavy in her gut, a cold, hard stone that had been there since that terrible night, since the moment Alex had confessed, since the moment she had chosen silence over truth.

Harding leaned forward, her hands clasped loosely on the polished table. “Sarah, we’re not talking about a spilled drink or a forgotten appointment. We’re talking about a murder. Alex is dead. And the circumstances surrounding his death are… complicated.”
