The air in the precinct hung thick and heavy, a stale breath of coffee and desperation. Detective Harding traced the condensation on her water glass, the ice cubes clinking a lonely rhythm against the plastic. Eleven days. Eleven days since Alex had been found, sprawled on the cold, unforgiving concrete of that alley, his charisma extinguished like a snuffed candle. Eleven days of whispers, evasions, and the palpable, suffocating silence that had descended upon the remaining friends.

She’d been back to the scene a dozen times, each visit a fruitless attempt to coax secrets from the indifferent brickwork. The alley itself offered no clues, no discarded weapon, no rogue fingerprint that didn't belong. It was too clean, too… deliberate. Like a stage meticulously set for a tragedy, with the players already having exited, leaving only the chilling emptiness behind.

Harding closed her eyes, replaying the fragmented conversations, the averted gazes. Sarah, her eyes perpetually red-rimmed, a storm brewing beneath the surface of her grief. Mark, his jaw set in a granite-hard line, his silence more accusatory than any spoken word. Emily, flitting around the edges of their mourning, a bird caught in a gale, her every movement a testament to her unraveling. They were a triptych of anguish, each holding a piece of the truth, each unwilling to offer it up.
