A Mother's Silence
Bean, Leah's mother, watches with a cold gaze. Her silence is a heavy burden, a reflection of her mate's rigid stance, yet a flicker of conflict might lie beneath her impassive exterior.
The familiar scent of pine and damp earth filled my lungs, a comforting aroma I usually clung to like a lifeline. But tonight, it felt thin, brittle, like a cobweb stretched too taut. My paws moved with a practiced silence across the forest floor, a skill honed by years of avoiding the sharp eyes of my parents, of slipping away from the suffocating weight of their disapproval. I wasn't sure where I was going, only that it was *away*. Away from the gilded cage of the alpha den, away from the chilling indifference that had become the soundtrack to my life.
The night air was alive with the usual chorus of crickets and the rustle of unseen creatures. I paused, tilting my head, my ears swiveling, catching the faint murmur of voices carried on the breeze. It was a familiar cadence, one that sent a shiver down my spine. My parents. They were near the edge of the territory, by the old oak where the moonlight pooled like spilled milk. Curiosity, a dangerous beast I’d always struggled to tame, clawed at me. I crept closer, weaving through the shadows, my heart thrumming a frantic rhythm against my ribs.
I found a thicket of ferns, providing a perfect screen, and pressed myself against its cool fronds. And then I heard it. My father’s voice, a low rumble, laced with a weariness I’d never heard before. "She’s a burden, Bean. A constant reminder of… things we’d rather forget."
