Shadows on the Horizon
A grave threat looms over the pack, testing its strength and unity. Leah feels the danger, her Sight piercing the veil of the unknown, urging her to act despite her parents' disapproval.
The air in the den had always been thick with unspoken things, a miasma of fear and resentment that clung to the scent of my parents like a shroud. But tonight, it was different. Tonight, the silence itself seemed to hum with a malevolence that prickled the fur along my spine. I’d slipped away, the hunter’s instinct a sharp whisper in my blood, drawn by a preternatural unease. Now, huddled in the shadows just beyond the entrance to their private den, I heard it all. Not the usual clipped commands or the territorial growls that defined their Alpha authority, but a conversation whispered low, laced with a venom that chilled me to the bone.
"She's a burden, Thistle," Bean's voice, usually as smooth as river stones, was rough with a weariness I’d never heard. "A constant reminder. We should never have—”
"Don't speak it aloud, Bean," my father interrupted, his own voice a low growl that vibrated through the earth. "But you are right. If only she had never been born. She is not what we expected. Not what the pack needs."
