The cold, damp earth seeped through my fur, a stark contrast to the burning ache in my chest. Each sob that wracked my body felt like a physical blow, a testament to the hollowness that had taken root within me. The ancient stones of the burial ground, silent witnesses to generations of my pack’s lineage, seemed to absorb my grief, offering no comfort, only an echoing emptiness. I had always known I was different, an anomaly in the rigid structure of pack life, a puzzle my Alpha parents, Thistle and Bean, couldn’t solve, or perhaps, wouldn’t. Their disdain, a constant, biting wind, had chilled me to the bone for as long as I could remember. But tonight, the whispers I’d accidentally overheard – their hushed, venomous words wishing I’d never been born – had ripped away the last vestiges of my hope, leaving only raw, bleeding despair.

“Why?” I choked out, my voice raw and broken, directed at the indifferent expanse of the night sky. “Why was I made like this? Why am I an offense to my own blood?” My tears, hot and stinging, fell onto the moss-covered stones, blurring the ancient carvings that spoke of a past I felt increasingly disconnected from. I was Elara, daughter of the Alpha, yet I was an outsider in my own home, an unwanted presence. The weight of their rejection was crushing, a physical burden that made it hard to breathe. I curled tighter, a small, broken thing beneath the vast, uncaring cosmos.

As the last of my tears threatened to fall, a tremor ran through the ground beneath me. It wasn’t the violent shudder of an earthquake, but a deep, resonant hum, as if the very earth was sighing. Then, a soft light began to bloom around me, not the harsh glare of the sun, but a gentle, ethereal glow that seemed to emanate from the air itself. It pulsed, growing brighter, warmer, chasing away the chill that had settled deep within my bones. I looked up, my vision swimming, and saw… impossibilities.
