The air in the pack lands grew thick with a nameless dread, a palpable tension that coiled in the bellies of every wolf, from the youngest pup to the oldest elder. It was a scent I could now detect, a discordant note in the symphony of our existence, something the others felt but couldn't name. My parents, Thistle and Bean, the Alpha pair, moved with a forced stoicism, their faces etched with a grim resolve that did little to reassure the anxious murmurs rippling through the pack. They organized patrols with an almost frantic energy, their commands sharp and clipped, betraying the fraying edges of their composure.

I watched them, my gaze now sharpened by the Sight, and saw the flicker of fear behind their stern facades. It was a fear that mirrored the apprehension I’d felt before the Sky Gods had answered my solitary plea, a primal terror that clawed at the very soul. But now, alongside that echo of past vulnerability, I felt a new strength thrumming beneath my fur, a readiness that the Sight had ignited. It was a stark contrast to the hollow ache of rejection that had once been my constant companion. The memory of their whispered words, "We wish she hadn't been born," still echoed in the quiet chambers of my mind, a phantom sting, but it no longer held the power to cripple me. Instead, it was a reminder of what I was fighting against, both within myself and for those I now felt an undeniable pull to protect.

The threat, whatever it was, was no longer a distant shadow. It was a palpable presence, a miasma that clung to the edges of our territory, making the familiar forest seem alien and menacing. The deer scattered at unseen disturbances, their usual bold foraging replaced by skittish retreats. The birds fell silent, their cheerful songs replaced by an unnerving stillness. Even the wind seemed to whisper warnings, rustling the leaves with a sound that was more a lament than a breeze.
