Chapter 6
An Oath Fulfilled
The battle is won, the Persian threat repelled, and Athens' naval supremacy secured. Lykon is hailed as a hero, his skill and bravery recognized, his shipwright's oath to excellence and service to his city triumphantly fulfilled.
The air still tasted of salt and smoke, a lingering ghost of the fury that had raged across the waves. Athens had bled, but Athens had prevailed. The Persian fleet, once a terrifying armada stretching to the horizon, was now a scattered, broken thing, limping back towards the shores of Asia, their invasion dreams shattered against the unyielding shield of Athenian resolve. The cheers, at first tentative, then roaring, had begun at Salamis and echoed all the way to the Piraeus. Lykon, his hands still raw from gripping oars and his tunic stained with the grime of desperate action, felt the weight of it all settle upon him.
He stood on the quay, the familiar scent of pine tar and cured hides a balm to his battle-weary senses. The Swiftwing, his Swiftwing, bobbed gently against the weathered wood, her sleek lines a testament to the sleepless nights and the unwavering faith he’d poured into her creation. She bore the scars of battle – gouges in her hull, splintered oar rests, a tattered sail – but she had held true. More than held true, she had danced through the chaos, a silver dart in the churning sea, carrying Lykon and his crew through the heart of the fray.
Elara found him there, her eyes, usually so bright and full of life, now soft with a weariness that mirrored his own. She didn’t speak, simply came to stand beside him, her shoulder brushing his. He leaned into her, a silent acknowledgment of the shared ordeal, the unspoken fears and triumphs.
