The salt spray, usually a bracing kiss, felt heavy and damp against Lykon’s skin. It clung to his tunic, to the rough wood of the docks, and to the very air he breathed. The Persian sails, a distant, ominous smudge on the horizon, had grown from a whisper to a roar, and now, they were a palpable threat. The Athenian fleet, a forest of masts and oars, bobbed nervously in the Piraeus, a magnificent, yet vulnerable, beast. And at its heart, tethered to its mooring like a fledgling bird, was the Swiftwing.

She was a marvel, Lykon’s Swiftwing. Not just a trireme, but an argument against complacency, a testament to the impossible. Her hull was leaner, her lines more aggressive than any vessel that had ever slid from Athenian timbers. Her ram, forged with a subtle, almost predatory curve, promised a speed and agility that defied the traditional, brutish power of her sisters. Lykon had poured every ounce of his skill, every sleepless night, every whispered secret from his unconventional designs into her. He traced the curve of a newly carved oar lock, his calloused fingers reverent. He had dared to deviate, to experiment, to trust the whisper of intuition that told him the old ways, while proud, were not enough.

The Council will be… impressed.” The slight hesitation before the word ‘impressed’ snagged at Lykon’s attention. Theron had been instrumental in pushing the Council to commission the Swiftwing, a project that had consumed Lykon for months. He knew Theron’s reputation, his deep understanding of naval strategy, but lately, there had been a subtle shift. Theron’s cautious pronouncements, his dismissal of Lykon’s more audacious ideas as ‘reckless fancy,’ had begun to grate.
