The pre-dawn chill clung to the Piraeus like a damp shroud, a stark contrast to the simmering heat that would soon engulf the Athenian fleet. Lykon, his knuckles white against the rough wood of a half-finished hull, felt the familiar ache in his shoulders and the deeper ache of unease in his gut. The whispers had grown louder, more insistent, weaving through the creak of timbers and the rhythmic clang of hammers. Treachery, they said, was afoot, a serpent coiled in the belly of their beloved city.

He stole a glance towards the far end of the shipyard, where the hulking shape of Demetrios’s latest galley loomed. Demetrios, with his sneering confidence and his insistence on the tried-and-true, was a constant thorn in Lykon’s side. But Lykon’s suspicions, nurtured by Elara’s quiet observations and his own gut feeling, pointed higher, towards the man who had taught him everything he knew. His mentor, the esteemed Master Theron.

The air thrummed with anticipation for the upcoming Persian confrontation. Every Athenian shipwright felt the weight of the moment, the desperate need for speed and strength. Lykon, however, felt it more keenly. His own creation, the ‘Swiftwing,’ was nearing completion, a vessel born of sleepless nights and daring, unconventional design. It was a gamble, a departure from the rigid traditions Theron so fiercely upheld, and Lykon knew, deep down, that its success or failure would be judged not just by the gods, but by the very men who claimed to guide Athens.
