The air in Silas’s archive room was thick with the scent of aged paper and a desperation that clung to everything like dust. It was a place I’d spent countless hours, poring over grainy photocopies of maps that showed impossible coastlines and faded sketches of celestial bodies that defied all known astronomy. But tonight, a different kind of obsession had taken root. Silas had finally granted me access to the ‘Inner Sanctum,’ a small, temperature-controlled vault where the truly ancient texts were kept. He called them the ‘Foundational Documents,’ the bedrock upon which their entire understanding of the world was built.
My fingers, trembling slightly, traced the faded ink of a vellum scroll. It wasn’t a map, nor was it a scientific treatise. It was a series of intricate diagrams, almost like blueprints, interspersed with cryptic symbols that hummed with an energy I couldn’t quite articulate. These weren’t the ramblings of madmen or the musings of ancient philosophers. These were instructions. Precise, deliberate instructions.
“What do you think, Gracie?” Silas’s voice, smooth as polished obsidian, startled me. He stood in the doorway, silhouetted against the dim light of the main room, his eyes glinting with an unnerving intensity.
