The air thickened, growing heavy like a storm about to break, though the sky above remained an impossible, unwavering sapphire. We’d been trekking for days, the jagged peaks of what Silas called the ‘Outer Rim’ a constant, imposing presence to our left. The landscape was stark, beautiful in its desolation, but it was the sky, always the sky, that held my attention. Today, though, something was wrong. Terribly wrong.

The horizon, usually a crisp line, seemed to… shimmer. Not the gentle, almost imperceptible waver I’d grown accustomed to, the kind that fueled my late-night research and whispered to me of a grander truth. This was a violent distortion, like heat rising from asphalt on a scorching summer day, but it was happening in the distance, across a vast, empty plain. It pulsed, a visible tremor that made the world feel unsteady.

“Silas, look!” I pointed, my voice tight with a sudden unease. Maya, walking beside me, followed my gaze, her brow furrowed.
