“Anything?” Maya’s voice, usually bright, was now a hushed whisper, barely audible over the gnashing of the engine. She sat beside Gracie, her knuckles white as she clutched the worn leather seat. Her eyes, usually alight with a hopeful curiosity, darted nervously towards the windows.

Gracie shook her head, her gaze fixed on the horizon that refused to behave. It wasn’t just the familiar double image anymore; it was a shimmering, fluid thing, as if the very fabric of the world was being stretched and pulled by invisible hands. “Still… off,” she murmured, the word tasting like ash. “Like a bad watercolor painting.”
