Chapter 11
Escape from the Construct
Gracie, aided by a disillusioned Maya, flees the collapsing expedition. They navigate treacherous, shifting landscapes, pursued by Silas's remaining followers.
The ground beneath my feet buckled, not like an earthquake, but like a poorly rendered CGI backdrop tearing at the seams. One moment, I was clutching Maya’s arm, the air thick with the acrid smell of ozone and something akin to burnt sugar, the next, the familiar, if distorted, ice plains of our expedition’s supposed ‘edge’ dissolved into a swirling vortex of impossible colors. Silas’s triumphant shouts, once a beacon of conviction, were now choked screams swallowed by the cacophony.
“Gracie! This way!” Maya’s voice, though strained, cut through the chaos. She was already pulling me, her grip surprisingly strong, towards a patch of what looked like solid ground, a stark contrast to the rippling, liquid sky above. We stumbled, boots crunching on something that felt like solidified static. The air vibrated, a low hum that burrowed into my bones.
Behind us, the remnants of Silas’s grand pronouncements were dissolving. The ice sculptures that were meant to signify the world’s true north, the meticulously crafted banners proclaiming ‘The Edge is Here,’ all warped and melted like wax under a blowtorch. I caught a glimpse of Silas, his face a mask of disbelief, reaching out as if to physically grasp the reality that was slipping through his fingers. His followers, once a unified front of unwavering faith, were scattering, some frozen in terror, others desperately trying to reassert their fallen banners into the unstable ground.
