The air crackled, not with the static of an impending storm, but with something far more potent, something that vibrated deep within my bones. Silas’s pronouncements about the ‘veil’ thinning had always felt like dramatic pronouncements, a flourish to keep us, his flock, enthralled. But now, standing on this desolate, wind-scoured plateau, the sky above us wasn’t just blue; it was a kaleidoscope of impossible hues, bleeding into one another like wet paint on a cosmic canvas.
The horizon, that ever-present, ever-shifting line that had been the obsession of my life, was no longer a single, discernible boundary. It was a fractured mosaic. One moment, I saw the familiar, comforting curve of what I’d always believed was the ice wall, a shimmering barrier against an infinite void. The next, it fractured, splintered, and reformed into something alien, a jagged mountain range piercing a sky the color of bruised plums, teeming with geometric shapes that pulsed with an inner light.
“Look!” Maya gasped, her voice barely a whisper, her usual effervescence replaced by a wide-eyed terror that mirrored my own. She pointed a trembling finger towards what should have been the barren expanse of the tundra. Instead, a shimmering, opalescent city rose from the earth, its spires impossibly thin, reaching towards a twin sun that blazed with an unnatural violet intensity. I blinked, and it was gone, replaced by a swirling nebula of emerald and gold.
