The dust of battle, still settling like a fine, gray shroud over the Valley of Elah, held the scent of triumph and the lingering tang of fear. David, his heart still thrumming with the echo of the giant’s fall and the joyous shouts of the Israelite army, found himself adrift in a sea of faces. They were a tide of adoration, each one reaching out, clamoring for a touch, a word, a glimpse of the shepherd boy who had dared to defy the impossible. It was overwhelming, this sudden, blinding spotlight. He was accustomed to the quiet communion of the hills, the lowing of his sheep, the rustle of wind through the sparse grass. His eyes, the color of a clear desert sky, held a warmth and intelligence that immediately drew David’s attention. He approached with a gentle smile, his presence a calming balm to David’s overstimulated senses.
