The dew-kissed grass of her village still clung to Lyra’s worn boots as she stepped beyond the familiar, comforting circle of homes. The air, usually alive with the gentle hum of morning chores and the distant bleating of sheep, felt unnervingly still, as if holding its breath. A knot of apprehension tightened in her stomach, a familiar sensation that had been her constant companion since the Starfall had begun to weep tears of sorrow instead of joy. She glanced back, a pang of longing for the warmth of her father’s study and the reassuring presence of Kael. But the image of the villagers’ faces, etched with a despair she had never witnessed before, spurred her onward. She carried their silent plea in her heart, a burden that felt both heavy and strangely liberating.

Her father, Elder Maeve, had looked at her with a mixture of pride and profound worry. His hands, usually steady as he mended nets or carved wood, had trembled as he pressed a small, leather-bound pouch into her palm. "This is all I can give you, Lyra," he'd murmured, his voice thick with unspoken fears. Inside, she knew, were a few dried herbs for sustenance and a small, smooth river stone, a token of their home. He had wanted to offer more, to equip her with the wisdom of ages, but Elara, the village’s most respected elder, had stood firm. “The legends are just that, Lyra,” she’d said, her voice firm but laced with a weariness that Lyra now understood too well. “A quest for a mythical stone is a fool’s errand when our village needs you here, tending to the broken.”

Kael had been different. He’d met her gaze, his own eyes a mirror of her resolve. He’d clasped her shoulder, his grip firm. "Go, Lyra," he'd said, his voice low and earnest. "Go and find this Sunstone. And know that even when you walk alone, you walk with the hopes of this village." He’d slipped a small, intricately carved wooden bird into her hand, a silent promise of return. Lyra clutched both the pouch and the bird now, the smooth wood a comforting presence against her palm.
