Lyra traced the worn symbols etched into the ancient oak, her fingertips brushing away centuries of dust. The air in the village archives, usually thick with the scent of dried herbs and aging parchment, felt heavy, suffocating. Each breath she took seemed to snag on the pervasive gloom that had settled over Oakhaven like a shroud. The joyous shimmer of the Starfall, a spectacle that usually painted the night sky with streaks of pure delight, had turned sickly, its light curdling into a bitter ache in the chest. Laughter had become a rarity, replaced by hushed, worried murmurs and the quiet weeping of those whose hearts had been most grievously wounded.

Her father, the village elder, sat hunched over a table, his usually bright eyes clouded with a sorrow that mirrored the sky. He had sent her to the archives, a place of forgotten knowledge, hoping that somewhere within its dusty confines, an answer might be found. Lyra understood. He was wrestling with the impossible, a darkness he couldn’t fight with tradition or decree.

She pulled a brittle scroll from its resting place, the papyrus crackling like dry leaves under her touch. The script was archaic, a language she’d only encountered in the oldest of village tales, stories whispered by grandmothers about times before the current peace. Kael had helped her decipher some of it, his quiet dedication a steady anchor in her own rising tide of fear. He believed in her, even when she doubted herself.
