The air in the cavern was thick, a cloying miasma that clung to Lyra’s lungs with every shallow breath. It pulsed with a malevolent rhythm, a counterpoint to the frantic beat of her own heart. Before her, the corrupted Starfall shimmered, no longer a beacon of pure joy but a swirling vortex of bruised purples and sickly greens, its light choked by an encroaching darkness. And at its heart, coalescing from the shadows, was the entity.

It had no true form, not one that Lyra’s eyes could fully comprehend. It was a manifestation of despair, a knot of twisting shadows and cold, hungry whispers. It was the source of the gnawing ache that had settled over her village, the phantom limb of lost happiness. It was the reason for the tears that had become as common as the morning dew.

“So,” a voice, like dry leaves skittering across a frozen pond, echoed not from a single point, but from everywhere at once, “the little light bearer has arrived.”
