The Sunstone pulsed in Lyra’s palm, a warm ember against the encroaching chill. Its soft, golden light, once a beacon of hope, now felt like a fragile shield against the encroaching darkness. Kael walked beside her, his hand resting lightly on the hilt of his worn dagger, his gaze sweeping the oppressive landscape. They had followed the Sunstone’s ethereal trail, a shimmering thread woven through the increasingly distorted reality around them. The familiar, comforting woods of their home had twisted into a place of gnarled branches that clawed at the bruised sky and a silence that pressed in on their eardrums, heavy with unspoken dread.

“It’s… different here,” Kael murmured, his voice barely a whisper, as if afraid to break the brittle stillness. The air itself felt thick, cloying, laced with a scent that was both metallic and sickly sweet, like bruised fruit left too long in the sun.

Lyra nodded, her own breath catching in her throat. The Sunstone’s glow intensified, its light reaching out, probing the shadows, and revealing a scene of profound desolation. Twisted, skeletal trees clawed at the sky, their bark peeling like sunburnt skin. The ground beneath their feet was a mosaic of cracked earth and patches of grey, withered moss. It was a place where joy had been leached away, leaving only the hollow ache of its absence. This was not a natural desolation; it was a wound.
