The sky, which had been a gentle blue sprinkled with fluffy clouds, began to darken. It wasn't a slow, creeping dusk, but a swift, bruised purple that swallowed the light. Laima, her yellow hair catching the last rays of sunshine, looked up, a prickle of unease tracing its way down her spine. A low rumble, like a giant’s stomach grumbling, vibrated through the soles of her worn leather boots. Then another, louder this time, and closer. It wasn’t the distant grumble of a summer storm; this was a sound that shook the very foundations of the world, a sound that spoke of immense, ancient power.

Laima hugged herself, a shiver that had nothing to do with the cooling air running through her. She remembered the warnings, the tales of Perkūnas’s wrath, of the fiery rituals he demanded. It felt like the path she was walking, the one that had already felt like a long, hard climb, was about to become even more perilous.
