Chapter 18
Emerging from the Smoke
As the smoke clears, Laima emerges, her spirit refined by the ordeal. The trials have tested her, but her resilience remains unbroken.
The air, thick and acrid, slowly began to thin, revealing the aftermath of the fiery dance. Laima, her skin dusted with ash, her hair singed at the edges, blinked against the returning light. It wasn't the blinding glare of the ritual's peak, but a softer, more forgiving glow, like the dawn breaking after a tempest. She was still standing. The heat had been immense, a searing embrace that had threatened to consume her very essence, yet here she was, breathing, her heart a steady drum against her ribs.
She looked down at her hands, still trembling slightly, but they were her own hands, marked by the ordeal, yes, but not broken. The plum tree, her spirit’s anchor, had held firm. She remembered the intense pressure, the feeling of being stripped bare, each layer of fear and doubt flayed away by the flames. It had been a terrifying stripping, like a tree losing its bark, exposing its raw, vulnerable core. But just as a plum tree’s core is its strength, its very life force, so too had hers been revealed, not as something fragile, but as something enduring.
The smoky haze swirled around her, carrying with it the faint, sweet scent of burning herbs, a smell that had once been terrifying, but now seemed almost comforting, a testament to the ritual’s completion. She could almost hear the distant rumble of Perkūnas's chariots receding, their thunderous fury spent, leaving behind a hushed reverence. Jupiter’s watchful gaze, too, felt less like an imminent judgment and more like a silent acknowledgment. They had tested her, these ancient powers, hurled her into the heart of their primal fire, and she had not crumbled.
