Chapter 15
Perkūnas's Cleansing Fire
The flames of Perkūnas's ritual rise, a powerful force meant to cleanse and transform. Laima faces the heat, her spirit tested but not broken.
The air crackled, not with the gentle hum of summer insects, but with a raw, untamed energy that vibrated deep within Laima’s bones. It was the scent of ozone and ancient power, a prelude to a storm far grander than any she had ever witnessed. The sky, once a canvas of soft blues and fluffy clouds, was now a bruised purple, churning with an ominous energy. From the distant horizon, a sound like a thousand galloping hooves, mingled with the growl of a celestial beast, announced the arrival of Perkūnas and Jupiter in their thunderous chariots. Laima stood firm, her heart a steady drumbeat against the rising symphony of the divine. She remembered the plum tree, its roots sunk deep into the earth, its branches reaching for the sky, steadfast and unwavering. She would be like that tree.
The ground beneath her feet began to tremble, not with the gentle tremors of an earthquake, but with a rhythmic pulse that seemed to echo the very heartbeat of the world. The chariots, vast and terrible, descended from the heavens, their wheels forged from lightning and their steeds creatures of pure, incandescent energy. Perkūnas, his beard a cascade of silver lightning, his eyes like twin suns burning with righteous fire, stood at the forefront. Beside him, Jupiter, his presence more serene yet no less imposing, his gaze encompassing the vast expanse of the sky and earth. They were not here to punish, Laima understood, but to test. To cleanse.
A towering pyre, built from ancient, gnarled wood that seemed to absorb the very light around it, stood at the center of a clearing. Smoke, thick and fragrant with unknown herbs, began to curl upwards, catching the first fiery tendrils of the celestial storm. This was the ritual, the heart of the trial. It was not a place of fear, but of transformation. Laima walked towards it, her steps deliberate, her gaze fixed on the rising flames. The heat was intense, a palpable force that pushed against her, yet it did not scorch. It was a different kind of fire, one that sought to purify, not destroy.
