Chapter 12
The First Spark of the Rite
The ancient ritual begins, marked by a single spark. Laima stands ready, her heart beating with a mix of trepidation and unwavering resolve.
The air crackled, not just with the approaching storm that rumbled in the distance like an old giant clearing its throat, but with something far older, far more potent. Laima stood at the edge of the clearing, her bare feet sinking slightly into the cool, damp earth. It was a place she’d only heard whispered about in hushed tones, a place where the veil between worlds thinned, and the old powers stirred. The plum tree, her silent sentinel, seemed to lean in, its branches rustling as if in encouragement.
Before her, a circle of stones, worn smooth by countless seasons and perhaps, by the touch of forgotten hands, waited. In the center lay a pyre, not of dry, brittle wood, but of ancient, gnarled branches, thick with moss and the scent of the deep forest. It smelled of secrets and of time itself. Laima’s heart, a small bird trapped in her chest, fluttered wildly. It wasn't fear, not exactly. It was the thrum of anticipation, the awareness of standing on the precipice of something immense.
She remembered the deceptive sweetness of the Brahmanic salads, their bright colors and promises of instant peace, so easily discarded now. She remembered the unsettling stillness of the swamp, its murky depths that had tried to swallow her hope. Those were trials of the mind, of the spirit’s discernment. This… this felt different. This was a trial of fire, a test of the very core of her being.
